Q5) How did you attract/address your target audience?

Evaluation: Question 5)

The importance of getting audience feedback was really important when I created my thriller opening. I had to find out what my audience liked in thrillers as well as what they were expecting to see from my thriller film.

I carried out two forms of research activity to find out my audiences opinions;
I did a questionnaire before I made my product to ensure that I included their thoughts and opinions into my planning. This would make sure that I attracted and addressed their needs. I made results from this to help me make key decisions.
Once I made my product, I carried out a focus group where people watched my product and I got feedback from them to make sure that my product did attract and address my audiences needs.

Before I did any of my own planning, to find out what the thriller audience liked within thrillers and to find out what was conventional, I did some secondary research into existing products.

  • Doing secondary research into existing film allowed us to get a better understanding of what we can and cannot include in our own thriller, we are able to see what made an existing film successful and how it could have been even better with the feedback left by the viewers when we read some reviews.

  • After doing my secondary research into existing thrillers, I have found that most thrillers tend to be target at individuals aged 15 and 30 due to the graphical and more explicit contents it may have. From this I have also decided to keep my target audience between those age boundaries and will use the information I gathered during my primary research to meet my audience expectation. The audience was also unisex so I would do this too.

My questionnaire:

  • Once I was also able to identify the suitable target audience, to attract them I created a questionnaire that contained a series of question ssthat will allow me to meet the expectation of the viewers by knowing what they may or may not enjoy while watching a thriller film. This was important because it gave me an idea of what I need to include and what institution would be suitable for the distribution of my product in order to attract more viewers.

Image of my questionnaire:

  • Below are some key question which helped me out on ensuring that I would attract and address the right audience.

What age rating are thrillers you watch?
Most people said they were 15 or 18.
This helped me make the decision that I would make my thriller film have the rating of 15 as this was conventional and people expected this.

What thriller sub-genre do you most enjoy?
The options were: action, crime, psychological, sci-fi and religious.
Most people said psychological in their response.
This helped me make the decision that I should make my thriller a psychological one to make sure that I attracted my target audiences.

What themes do you like thrillers to have?
The options were: death, guilt and obsession, crime, revenge, vengeance, greed or any others.
Most  people said that they liked obsession, revenge and guilt.
This helped me to make the key decision that I would include all these themes within my product and I did as the young girl in my product was obsessed with her child and wanted to keep her safe from the mental home out of guilt.

Who was your favourite antagonist in a thriller and why?
Fatma, 17 said "I like it when the antagonist is someone that you don't expect, or someone you feel is bad all along but then you end up liking when you see a twist".
I liked this response so I made a bit of a twist in my narrative. Who people in the film thought were was the antagonist was in fact the protagonist or victim for the audience. Doing this meant that I was attracting my audiences needs.

It was important doing a primary research as it helped our group on deciding who would be the right audience for our production and how we would attract them

Overall, my questionnaire feedback has been really helpful in helping me make choices on how I wanted to attract and appeal to my audience. This feedback from the questionnaire helped me choose my contentions, content and ideas so make sure that I picked ideas that would address my audience.

My focus group
The feedback I got here was beneficial in showing me that I did attract my target audience. I asked 20 people from my sixth from to come and watch my product and leave me with some feedback. I only asked people who liked thrillers so their feedback would be most helpful.

Ken, 18 said: "I really liked your use of editing on the female character. It made me feel really sorry for her and want to know more about her because she looked so mysterious".

Danni 19 said "I think you should have made more of a narrative with the girl with her child beforehand, like a flashback so it is a little clearer what was going on".
Following this comment, Samera said "Yeah but the news report helped us understand that".

Overall, the majority of the audience were in favour of liking my production so I strongly believe that I attracted them.

The feedback overall was really helping in letting me know whether I attracted and addressed my target audience and I believe from using the feedback from my questionnaire and getting my focus group feedback, that I did.

Planning: pre production paperwork

Intro:
In our groups, we had to each take on the role of creating a professional piece of paperwork that would need to be distributed to people in our groups as well as our cast. We had to do this to ensure that the filming runs smoothly and in case any problem arises such as complaints for using a particular location, accidents occurring when filming or if an actor complains because the thriller is published, we will be able to fall back on the paperwork where all declaration were made.

Production Schedule:
- The production schedule is given to all members taking part in the thriller to remind them what days, location, scenes they will be taking part in.

-the location schedule was given to:
  •  Marlyn
  • cee jay
  • Christine
  • Josh
  • Shelah

Client release form:
-A client release form is an agreement form which is given to the actors stating  what they will be involved in, the risk that may occur and how it will be dealt with or who would be held responsible and what the production will be used for. the client can only take part in the production once they have agreed and sign the form.

-the client release form was given to:
  •  Marlyn
  • cee jay
  • Christine
  • Josh

Location Recee:

- The location recee is also given to all members taking part in the production to informs them of every particular location the producer wants want the scenes to be film and reason for it.

-the location release form was given to:
  • Marlyn
  • cee jay
  • Christine
  • Josh
  • Shelah

Location Release Form:

the location release form is similar to the client release form as it requires agreement from the owner or the person in charge of location we would like to film our thriller. the location release is always given to the owner of a location asking for permission before using the area.

Risk Assessment:

-the risk assessment looks at every possible incidence that can occur during the the production and how dangerous or serious it could be depending on what equipment we will be using. this form is given to al members in the group because it tells them how to deal with any problem that can occur and what can be done to avoid it.

The risk assessment form was given to:

  • Marlyn
  • cee jay
  • Christine
  • Josh
  • Shelah

Planning: Preliminay task

The purpose of preliminary task

the purpose of the preliminary task was to give us an idea of how our filming process will be, how to use equipment such a tripod  and editing software to remove any unwanted scene to have a continuous edit. it allowed us to understand what each member in the group is good at and locate what areas would need some improvement.

Video

The scenario (Screenshot)

the scenario of our preliminary task was between marlyn and I and was about how she got me into trouble because she has forgotten to bring a few thing that i was supposed to hand back to Sean who i was afraid of due to his superiority. so i was frustrated at her because i then had to beg Sean on giving me another chance to get all his things to him.

Difficulties you encountered whilst filming

while doing our preliminary task, we encountered a few problems such background noise coming from students walking around the school, this prevented us from talking to one another as we were always disturbed and afraid of picking up any background noise in our recording. another problem we encountered was that we did not know when we had enough scenes to stop recording, so we just had to create many scenes hoping it would be 30 seconds which also meant that we would a lot to do when it come to editing.

Difficulties you encountered whilst editing (Screenshots)

As it was our first time editing on an IMac and using the Final cut pro software , we had to familiarise ourselves with it first as we struggled on retrieving the videos located on the SD card and importing it into the final cut pro application to start editing. we also had some trouble saving our final video which had to be exported and saved along with the original videos in the same location.

What have you learned?
from the preliminary task I gain a bit of knowledge on how the whole filming process works, knowing what needs to taking into consideration, for example choosing a suitable and quiet environment, planning out scenes in advance and having the correct equipment. I also learned how to edit which I thought it was really beneficial as I was able to edit our video on my own due to the absence of my team mate and I think this skill can be useful in similar circumstances in the future.

Conclusion: How has the task beneficial

the preliminary task was beneficial because it gave us an idea of what is expected from each members and thought us how a slight mistake can effect a the whole production. I learned the importance of working as a team, planning out before producing and being responsible in role we all undertook. in addition we also learned how to operate the cameras, deciding what shot and angle should be used to make the scene symbolic and lastly how to edit it.
